As the number of special needs children being educated in the mainstream classrooms grows, so does the stress and needs of those teachers with whom the task of educating them lies.
How are teachers coping with the growing number of autistic students and how does autism in the classroom affect the other students.
One recent study showed a staggering 40% of autistic students in mainstream education will at some point become the victim of bullying.Statistics also show on average around 27% of all autistic students will be excluded, with a quarter of those being excluded on more than one occasion.
Autism education needs
Autism education should begin as soon as the symptoms of autism have been detected and a diagnoses of autism has been given.
Early diagnosis of autism means an intervention plan can be set up and implemented straight away giving the autistic child more help with his/her autism symptoms.
To help improve the social, communication, imagination and interaction skills of that child. All kids with autism will have varying degrees of autism symptoms and therefore each child will need assessing separately and individual IEP plans should be organized.
In elementary school, kids with autism are receiving help to learn skills in areas of developmental delay. As well as receiving appropriate encouragement to develop those areas of skill already mastered.Ideally the curriculum should be adapted to suit the autistic students need's.
